: That is an interesting analysis of trilogies, but I, personally, would
: hesitate to use Empire Strikes Back as an example for any kind of
: generalization. Yes, it fits your trilogy description in terms of the
: "thirds" of the movie, but IMO Empire is the best of the Star
: Wars films. That's a bit of an oddity for trilogies. Well, that's just
: like my opinion, man (a little Lebowski reference for you).
Yeah, I was really having trouble thinking of movie trilogies last night when I wrote that. I agree that Empire was a rare exception where it was the strongest of the trilogy, but eventually decided that my statement about trilogies didn't assess the second movie's value, merely its structure. I guess I could have used The Matrix, or Scream, but they seemed like bad examples because you really could just watch the first ones and be done with them. Anyhow, I agree with your point, but I don't think it in anyway invalidates the analysis.
: A friend of mine said it was possibly better than the original. I tried to
: watch it on a plane but couldn't stay awake for more than half of it. I
: want to see the rest and I will, but what I saw was pretty much in
: agreement with your analysis.
It probably was better than the original, but it relies so heavily on the third movie that, like The Matrix, if the third movie sucks it invalidates the second one. So, it's hard to make that assessment with any certainty yet.
